New Commission Decision (EU) 2023/2440 as regards the yearly quantity of allowances in the aviation sector as referred to in Article 3c of Directive 2003/87/EC, the Directive on greenhouse gas emission allowance trading, „to be issued under the EU Emissions Trading System for 2024″ was published in the Official Journal (OJ) of the EU.
According to the decision, these allowances shall be set at 28,866,578. This limit takes into account the yearly reduction factor (4.3% up to 2027) as specified in Directive (EU) 2023/959 to reduce the overall number of available emission certificates.
The number of free allowances allocable prior to the coming into force of the 2023 Directive is 24,536,591 which is 85% of the above noted limit.
This Decision complements Commission Decision (EU) 2023/1575 which set out all allowances except for those of the aviation sector.
