IOSCO is set to mark its seventh annual World Investor Week (WIW) from 2 to 8 October 2023, with flexibility for participating jurisdictions to choose alternative weeks in October or November for WIW-related activities. This event has seen increasing participation from various jurisdictions, including both developed and emerging-market regions, over the past few years, demonstrating the growing importance of financial education in bolstering retail investor protection globally, even amid challenging conditions brought about by the global pandemic.
This year’s WIW campaign will center around three main themes: Investor Resilience, Crypto Assets, and Sustainable Finance, all of which have been identified by the IOSCO Board as highly pertinent in the context of current and anticipated global market dynamics. Additionally, the campaign will cover other essential topics such as Frauds and Scams Prevention, Basics of Investing, and Technology and Digital Finance.
Mr. Jean-Paul Servais, Chair of the IOSCO Board and Chairman of the Financial Services and Markets Authority in Belgium, underscores the significance of investor protection as a primary IOSCO objective. He highlights that securities regulators employ various tools, including policy, supervision, oversight, enforcement, and financial education, to promote and enhance investor protection. Given the evolving risks faced by retail investors, particularly in the wake of the pandemic, IOSCO’s Work Program for 2023-2024 will continue to prioritize investor education as a fundamental component of investor protection. This initiative will complement efforts aimed at combatting retail market misconduct and fraud, fostering investor confidence, promoting financial inclusion, and safeguarding investor interests.
